Database name examples

Concrete naming patterns for the situations you will actually hit: production databases, multi-environment projects, side builds and throwaway sandboxes. Copy the pattern, adapt the words.

Pattern 1: domain + purpose

For production databases, name what the data is about. This is the pattern most professional teams converge on.

ExampleFits
billingSingle-purpose service database
shop_ordersOne bounded context of a larger shop
fleet_telemetryIoT or event data for a fleet product
clinic_recordsDomain database for a healthcare app

Pattern 2: environment trios

One base name, three consistent variants. Domain first, environment last, so sorting and globbing group them.

DevStagingProduction
atlas_devatlas_stagingatlas_prod
shop_devshop_stagingshop_prod
ledger_devledger_stagingledger_prod

Our database name generator has a dedicated dev/staging/prod trio mode that produces these sets from one base word automatically.

Pattern 3: project prefix + domain

On shared servers or in organizations with many databases, a short project prefix prevents collisions and groups related databases in listings.

ExampleReads as
atlas_billingAtlas project's billing database
atlas_catalogAtlas project's catalog database
harbor_analyticsHarbor project's analytics store

Pattern 4: memorable word pairs

For sandboxes, workshop demos, tutorial databases and hackathon projects, descriptive accuracy does not matter — uniqueness and memorability do. Adjective + noun pairs shine here:

snake_casePascalCasekebab-case
crimson_foxCrimsonFoxcrimson-fox
harbor_lanternHarborLanternharbor-lantern
midnight_ledgerMidnightLedgermidnight-ledger
quiet_volcanoQuietVolcanoquiet-volcano

These are exactly what DbDen generates: pick a style, set a max length, and export the list as text.
